ST VLADIMIR'S SEMINARY PRESS
Popular Patristics Series Number 57 The Popular Patristics Series published by St Vladimir's Seminary Press provides readable and accurate translations of a wide range of early Christian literature to a wide audience—students of Christian history to lay Christians reading for spiritual benefit.
Recognized scholars in their fields provide short but comprehensive and clear introductions to the material. The texts include classics of Christian literature, thematic volumes, collections of homilies, letters on spiritual counsel, and poetical works from a variety of geographical contexts and historical backgrounds. The mission of the series is to mine the riches of the early Church and to make these treasures available to all.

Preface Ε 1, Cross' edition of St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Lectures on the Christian
Sacraments, presenting a complete Greek text of the Procatechesis and Mystagogical Catecheses with the 1838 English translation by Κ.
W. Church, first published in 1951 by S.P.C.K, and, subsequently, in 1977 by St. Vladimir's Seminary Press, has withstood the test of time remarkably well. For several decades it has provided teachers and students of early Christianity and early liturgy with a convenient, accessible, and affordable Greek text and translation of this important primary resource for the study of the baptismal and eucharistic liturgies of late fourthor, depending on their date and authorship, early fifth-century Jerusalem.
At least three things, however, necessitate a new edition at this time. First, R. W. Church's English translation, albeit viewed by Cross as a "minor theological classic" in its own right, was never that of the Greek text appearing in the former volume, a Greek text prepared and edited by Cross from the various available editions in the 1950s.
Second, some sixteen years after Cross's version appeared a new Greek critical edition was published, edited from all the available manuscripts, with a modern French translation, in A. Piédagnel's
Sources chrétiennes edition, Cyrille de Jérusalem: Catéchéses Mystagogiques,' although this now standard edition does not contain the Procatechesis. And third, scholarship on liturgy in fourthand fifth-century Jerusalem, as on the study of early Christian liturgical sources in general, has witnessed a decisive shift in focus, method, and conclusions over the past fifty-plus years. The attribution of authorship of the Mystagogical Catecheses to Cyril of Jerusalem,
'Cyrille de Jérusalem: Catéchéses Mystagogiques, ed. A. Piédagnel, trans. Pierre

ST CYRIL OF JERUSALEM
assumed by Cross, is an issue of some scholarly debate today, as is the dating of the overall liturgical content and context of that document as well. Dating ranges from the time of Cyril himself, to his successor John II, all the way to later in the fifth century. Such contemporary approaches to the document have made it imperative to provide not only a corrected Greek text and English translation, but also a new introduction taking into account these scholarly shifts.
At the same time, portions of Cross's introduction (e.g., the sections on Jerusalem, pilgrimage, and the life of Cyril) have been included almost verbatim with only partial revisions and updating where necessary. Hopefully, this revised edition will find wide acceptance and be greeted with appreciation by a new generation of teachers and students.
Few works of scholarship are completely individual undertakings, and acknowledgment and expressions of appreciation need to go to the following: to the Reverend Doctor Stefanos Alexopoulos,
Assistant Professor of Liturgy, Catholic University of America, for his critical read of the Greek text and translation and for his corrections and helpful comments; to Alex C.J. Neroth van Vogelpoel, a doctoral student in Liturgical Studies at the University of Notre
Dame, and my graduate assistant, for his careful proofreading of both the Greek and English of the whole manuscript; and, not least, to Father John Behr and the editorial staff of St Viadimir's Seminary
Press, for trusting me with this project and for seeing it through to publication in the impressive Popular Patristics Series. To all of these
Iam greatly indebted.
