NOTES Ill 259 PART III The World My Parish CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR: The Chimney Sweeper

1. One of Toplady's cherished beliefs was that the entire animal creation went to heaven. He was cross when John

Newton, the ex-sailor, expressed a fervent hope that there would be no fleas in heaven!

CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE: The Cry of the Poor and the Slaves 1. The title page of the first edition reads: '""An Authentic

Narration of Some Remarkable and Interesting Particulars in the Life of + + +, Communicated in a Series of Letters to the Rev. T. Haweis.'" Newton's name appeared in later editions.

2. See the present writer's Wilberforce (1977) and Amazing Grace: John Newton's Story (1981).

3. When Patty brought Wesley to dinner with Dr. Johnson (Dec. 18, 1783), and Wesley left after two hours, the doctor complained to her: 'Two hours! I could talk all day, and all night too, with your brother." And to Boswell he said, 'The dog enchants you with his conversation and then breaks away to go and visit some old woman!"
