This book had its origins as a series of lectures at the University of Oxford, and it was developed during speaking tours of the United States and Australia. I am grateful to the student audiences who provided much-appreciated comments on those lectures. A number of individuals, among whom I must single out Professor Gordon R. Lewis (Denver Seminary) for special mention, read this work in typescript and made invaluable suggestions for improvements.
