Select Bibliography
As the heading suggests, the following list of books and articles is not intended as a complete bibliographical guide to the complex and multidimensional argument set forth in the text. Rather, in the spirit of a responsible declaration of one’s immediate sources, it is, first of all and mainly, an alphabetical listing of works actually mentioned in the text, and second, a mention of other works that are related to the same areas of thought. Even so, for a subject as vast as the development of Western civilization—one in which I have been keenly absorbed for many years—it is impossible to remember, let alone do full justice to, all the writings which have helped to form my opinions.
Parentheses after a title indicate the original, primary date of publication where this date is of significance. Wherever possible, the publisher and date is supplied for an edition which is currently in print.
