When Oswald Chambers gave these lectures in the autumn of 1914, fear and uncertainty ruled the minds of many in Britain as World War I showed no sign of the early conclusion people had hoped for. Basic necessities were being rationed and, for most BTC students, money was in short supply. On December 17, as Oswald spoke on “The Habit of Wealth,” he asked, “What have we to spend this Christmas-time? We ought to be going about like multi-millionaires. Externally we may have 2£d. only, but spiritually we have all the grace of God to spend on others.”
