and Mand 1.1 through the linking terms of "all things" (omnia), and contrasts these general references with the particular creation of humankind in Gen 1:26 and Gen 2:7. In Haer. 5.8.1 he contrasts the Spirit as a pledge given specifically to the faithful (Eph 1:14, Rom 8:9, 15) with the fullness of the Spirit given in the final consummation (Gen 1:26, 1 Cor 13:12). Then, in Haer. 5.12.2, he develops the contrast between the breath in Gen 2:7 and the Spirit in 1 Cor 15:45 with allusions to Isa 42:5 and Isa 57:16. Both of these passages confirm the universality of the breath given to all in creation and the particularity of the Spirit given to the faithful.

Conclusion This survey of Irenaeus' reading strategies delineates the nature of his intertextual reading of Gen 1–3 in Adversus Haereses. Taken together these applied reading strategies explain how, for Irenaeus, the work of God in creation is entirely consonant with the unfolding events of the divine economy and the rest of divine revelation in scripture. These strategies are framed by a hermeneutical perspective that elevates the inspiration of scripture within his general view of divine revelation. In Irenaeus's scripture reading, it is only proper to interpret all portions of scripture in various methods of continuity and harmony beginning with creation. To be sure, not all of these reading strategies are mutually exclusive, but they often work in harmony as Irenaeus reads creation. Finally, I do not assume that this list of reading strategies is exhaustive.

It is obvious that, for Irenaeus, Gen 1–3 is a pivotal piece within a larger exegetical and theological mosaic of textual relationships. I expect that as other portions of scripture are analyzed from the perspective of intertextuality, they will continue to reveal more of the complexity of Irenaeus' applied exegesis under the direction of his hermeneutical perspective of scriptural consonance.
