HANS REINHARD SEELIGER, Considerations on the Background
CONSIDERATIONS ON THE BACKGROUND AND PUR-
POSE OF THE APOCALYPTIC CONCLUSION OF THE
DIDACHE
HANS REINHARD SEELIGER
Siegen The apocalyptic conclusion of the Didache has received little attention in the most recent literature on the subject and, in my opinion, not as much as it rightly deserves.! This small chapter shares this fate with many other apocalyptic texts, which have for a long time caused perplexity (Ratlosigkeit), as the title of a book in 1970 puts it.2 The situation has changed fundamentally since then; the attention paid to the texts and themes of apocalyptic in research has strengthened as two congresses, the one in Rome in 19773 and especially the one in Uppsala in 1979,4 bear witness.
With respect to the state of research into Didache 16, we have not, of course, got beyond the debate about questions of the history of traditions, which this short apocalyptic conclusion poses, and no unity has been achieved even in this matter.'

The following reflections aim at a modest goal: they are intended, besides reflection on some considerations of (a) the form of apocalyptic theology and (b) an important condition for understanding it, to (c) draw attention to some particular aspects of apocalyptic, which the Didache offers, and finally to (d) formulate a hypothesis concerning the purpose of the concluding chapter.
I One fruit of the recent discussion about apocalyptic texts is the attempt to define the literary genre of apocalypses more precisely.
Most convincing here is the definition of John J. Collins, given in the context of the work of the Genres Project of the American
Society of Biblical Literature: "'Apocalypse' is a genre [Gattung]® of revelatory literature with a narrative framework, in which a revelation is mediated by an otherworldly being to a human recipient, disclosing a transcendent reality which is both temporal, insofar as it envisages eschatological salvation, and spatial, insofar as it involves another, supernatural world."'? Those familiar with the attempts at definition will confirm that an attempt is made here to get beyond the systematization of different elements of the style of apocalyptic (pseudonymity, accounts of visions, revelations and keys, overviews of history, paraenesis, prayers etc.)® to a comprehensive description of the full literary form "Apocalypse".

APOCALYPTIC CONCLUSION OF THE DIDACHE
37S Obviously this does not mean that the comprehensive full literary form, above all one in book form, should have already existed at the beginning of apocalyptic literature, which indeed is not limited to apocalypses in the defined sense. But apocalyptic revelation theology in the form of the "Apocalypse" is nevertheless easily
Seitedacs since the second century B.C. (1 En 1-36 and Dan 2, <
Its great phase in the realm of Christian and Jewish theology lasted then until the end of the 2nd century C.E.!° But besides apocalypses in the defined sense, apocalyptic motifs and apocalyptic theology also entered into other literary genres at the same time; the apocalyptic categories in Pauline theology can only be referred to briefly.!! In our context, it is important to notice that, inside Christian literature at the time when apocalypses in the narrow sense were still being written, apocalyptic theology was pursued in other ways besides the complete literary form as such: besides the Epistle of Barnabas,'? one should refer to Papias,!3 to Justin,!4 and to Irenaeus,!5 as well as to apocalyptic traces in the early martyr acts!¢ and in the commentaries to the canonical apocalypses, in all probability beginning with Melito of Sardis.!7
For the evaluation of the apocalyptic conclusion of the Didache this means first of all that we do not have an apocalypse according to the definition before us. The narrative framework is missing, as is also any information about the revealer and receiver

of an apocalyptic message, as well as any information about the manner of the revelation. It rather reports an apocalyptic message, which already appears to have been issued; nothing is revealed here in the sense of the apocalyptic genre, but what is already known is repeated for the deepening of knowledge. In view of the other apocalyptic literature mentioned above, it is not surprising to find that sort of thing. Yet it appears to me that we have a special case before us in the Didache.
The Didache as a whole is, as Georg Schdllgen has recently shown, only a "selective church order", whose
"loose composition" on the one hand presents little difficulty to those interpolating additional instructions into the text in the face of newly arising problems, but whose greater openness of structure at the same time makes it correspondingly "difficult for the historian to prove such an insertion decisively."!8 The history of research into the Didache is a faithful picture of this problematic situation. !9
I am proceeding on the assumption that the apocalyptic part of the conclusion is not a later addition, as has been often claimed or suspected.2° This is because one finds here again a stylistic element or structuring principle often found in the Didache: the association of terms or catch-words.?! From the warning in 16:2b that "for the whole time of your faith will profit you nothing, if you do not become perfect", the author proceeds directly in 16:3 to the description of what is to be expected év Tatc¢ éoxaTtaics nusgpaic.?2
What comes next is certainly so different in background and form from the ethical instructions of the Two Ways. Teaching that it cannot have formed its conclusion, as Rordorf rightly insisted.23
The question is thus posed all the more acutely as to how this 18 Schdllgen, "Didache als Kirchenordnung, p. 22.

APOCALYPTIC CONCLUSION OF THE DIDACHE
piece of apocalyptic theology can be interpreted, providing, as it does, the final chord to the Didache, a selective church order.
Il In the interpretations offered up to now, people have been satisfied to point out that "the eschatological conclusion merely has the function of strengthening the warning to the reader to obey the instructions given in what precedes. The eschatology directed towards retribution in the end time becomes thus a subordinate aspect of the ethical instruction, and for the rest is a simple piece of teaching 'about the last things'."24
Egon Brandenburger has rightly argued that because the jus talionis plays an important réle inside the apocalyptic thought model, according to which the returning Lord will repay to each according to his work,?5 it cannot be deduced that it is the concept of judgement which positions enactment of law theologically.26 He argues that nowhere in New Testament or early Jewish apocalyptic is there a law based on judgment or expectation of the end. "It has long been known in what the law consists—but now, in this time of the world, it is prevented from its genuine appearance, held back, pushed down. It is precisely this which characterizes this aeon among other things as evil. The law belongs in the realm of the Creator, who has so ordered the world that it is oriented to himself and to life."27 The parenesis, which is only partly bound up with apocalyptic,?® brings the laws of life to remembrance, but it does not serve as their sanction. The sanctioning instance is the Judge who appears at the End, who re-instates the old order. It is however only one element in apocalyptic theology. Anyone who plays parenesis against apocalyptic in interpretation, runs into the 24 K. Wengst in the Introduction to his edition of the Didache (Didache
(Apostellehre), Barnabasbrief, Zweiter Klemensbrief, Schrift an Diognet (Darmstadt: Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft (SUC 2), 1984] p. 60); according to Schéllgen ("Didache als Kirchenordnung", p. 20 fn. 117), the function of Ch. 16 lies "méglicherweise...in den abschlieSenden Einzelbestimmungen der Schrift."
Niederwimmer (Die Didache, pp. 258f) interprets the chapter as a whole simply as concluding parenesis.
25 The lost conclusion of Did 16 can indeed be reconstructed following the implications of the framework of judgment, as is well known. Compare Wengst,

danger of overlooking important aspects of what it is intended to communicate.
Il Probably because of that, it has been maintained on more than one occasion that the Didache contains no theological debate,?° i.e. has no interest in dogmatic questions.° On the other hand it is striking that Did 16:7 expressly attacks the assumption that there will be a general resurrection of the dead, as attested by Jn 6:28f, but about which Lk 20:35 still has reservations. According to the Didache, expressly,-only the saints are saved. It differs thus also from the thought model of Revelation, which links the assumption of the general resurrection with that of the second death of the evil doers (Rev 20:11-21:8), and so mediates between the competing assumptions of a general or an exclusive resurrection of the dead.3! The Didache only allows the latter model,32 and so we get into relatively old traditions in the history of the development of theology, which have to be linked to the exclusive resurrection-belief of the Maccabbean
Martyrs, and are also found in Paul (1 Thess 4:16; Rom 6:5; 8:11), the Gospel of John (3:36), Ignatius (Trail 9:2) and Polycarp
(Phil 2:2),33 but differ from the chronologically or ontologically graded orders of resurrection, as later in Hippolytus,* in mil22 Wengst, Didache (Apostellehre), p. 17.

32 The idea of a general judgement after the resurrection, which is specifically restricted to the saints alone, as it results from one reconstruction of the conclusion of Didache 16 (compare fn. 25), is not without tensions! It would be profitable to research the early Christian conceptions of the resurrection with respect to whether they depart in every case from a general resurrection, or whether they do not more commonly than is accepted depart from an exclusive resurrection of believers.

APOCALYPTIC CONCLUSION OF THE DIDACHE
lenarian context in Irenaeus,35 and in gnostic context in the Treatise on Resurrection addressed to Rheginos in NgH I,4.36
The description of the Saviour as xa7&@epa (curse)? also points to a very old tradition. It reminds one of Christ "made into sin" of 1 Cor 5:21 and stands directly parallel to the saying of Gal
3:13, that he has become a curse (ka7&pa) for our sake as the crucified, since everyone who is hanged on a tree is cursed
(é€mixata&patos). Barnabas?® also describes him as the crucified Accursed One, who "on that day" will come again in the purple royal robe (7:9), and all these are reflections on the verdict of Dt
21:23,3° according to which anyone hanged on a pole is cursed by God. Paul, Barnabas and the Didache use this idea in the sense of a paradox christology: the one apparently accursed is in reality the future Saviour, who, as Paul then worked it out theologically, has broken the curse of the Law.4° We have all the grounds for the conclusion that we see here one of the oldest layers of christology, which experiences the Easter event as a revelation of the future quality as Judge of the one so shamefully crucified and did not yet use the title "Son of Man" for this purpose, which then makes the apocalyptic reference of this revelation very clear.*!
35 AdvHaer V.35:4 (SC 153, pp. 438-40). In my opinion, one cannot detect the millenarian context in Did, which O'Hagan (Material Recreation, pp. 28-30) cautiously indicates.

HANS REINHARD SEELIGER
The above two observations on Didache 16, which refer us to different ancient layers of early theology do not now, however, go along with the conception of imminent expectation. Rather the ideas about the World Deceiver, who will appear like a son of god,42 and about the fire of testing, take up a relatively large amount of space. It is striking that, in contrast to the in the narrower sense, the spatial dimension of a transcendent world is here completely missing, and only the future perspective of the temporal dimension plays a role. Since it is not a case of an originally apocalyptic revelation as such, which takes place in an transcendent world, but rather a repetition of long revealed traditional material, it is self-evident why only the temporal dimension plays a quintessential role: the world events climax in a dramatic development, which will allow the parousia to appear all the more triumphally.*4 In this parousia a change is expected; the conclusion of the Didache projects a discontinuous development of history.45 In view of this, the formula generally accepted in critical scholarship, that the imminent expectation of early Christianity has passed over into a continuing expectation, is false for sure, if by continuing expectation the idea of a continuing course of history is implied.
IV But why did the Didache at its conclusion hand on traditional material into which have flowed clearly theological assumptions from different stages of tradition?
It is conspicuous that the apocalyptic tradition in 16:3 begins with the warning about the false prophets in the last days. So it warns about them, and offers criteria in 11:5f, 8-10 for their exposure. Such warnings also introduce the apocalyptic chapters in Mk 13:22 and Mt 24:24. Precisely because the Didache is a selective church order, it cannot be without significance that this is the case here also. The reference to the false prophets must be more than just a traditional motif.
Both apostles (11:6) and prophets (11:9) can turn out to be false prophets.4° Now it has indeed legitimately been said that,
#2 16:4 (Rordorf & Tuilier, La Doctrine, p. 196, line 12); the translation "appear as the Son of God" in Wengst (Didache (Apostellehre), p. 89) is misleading.

APOCALYPTIC CONCLUSION OF THE DIDACHE
despite many statements, the Didache does not allow one to recognize anything exact about. the task of the apostle or the prophet.47
If this cannot be determined from the Didache with the help of inner criteria, then one may and must bring in other sources to clarify what they are, in view of the fact that these officials are so 'important that a false apostle or prophet is considered to be very dangerous.
Without being able here to go into the origin of apocalyptic from prophecy*® and the difficult questions about the identity of the prophetic and the teaching office4®, and indeed about the prophetic and apostolic offices® in the New Testament, nevertheless it seems to me to be very significant that both canonical apocalypses of the Bible, which undisputedly represent this genre of revelation literature in the narrow sense, are there themselves designated as prophetic.5! So apocalyptic proclamation was considered to be prophetic. And without claiming to describe the prophetic activity comprehensively in this way, it can indeed be reckoned as part of the prophetic activity.
I thus come to the thesis that the apocalyptic conclusion of the Didache, directed against the false prophets, preserves an important part of the preaching of the prophets attested in the Didache. Even if it was scarcely a norm of prophetic preaching, since the speech of the prophet was not subject to anyone's judgment.52 It is, however, conceivable on the other hand, that here the most important content of prophetic preaching is repeated for ns. 11 (1977) pp. 145-167, esp. 155 note 26; Rordorf & Tuilier, La Doctrine, p.

5! Daniel as a prophet: Mt 24:15; Rev as prophecy: Rev 11:3; 22:7, 10, 18f. In this context it is significant that the apocalypses in Mk 13 and Mt 24 begin with warnings about pseudo-prophets (Mk 13:22; Mt 24:24).
52 11:7 (Rordorf & Tuilier, La Doctrine, p. 184 lines 13f); criteria for the assesment of a prophet emerge only from his deeds: cf Schdllgen, "Didache als Kirchenordnung", pp. 13f. Because of the understanding that fasting and prayer are to be regarded as pre-requisites for the visionary, prophetic experience (cf. K. Koch,
"Vom profetischen zum apokalyptischen Visionsbericht" in Hellholm, Apocalypticism, pp. 413-46, esp. 430), the inclusion of commandments on prayer and fasting among the selected themes of the Didache may perhaps become understandable, as something that must of necessity be regulated by the congregations, since it emerged from the spiritual practice of the prophets and belonged to their parenesis.
HANS REINHARD SEELIGER
the communities that have no prophet.53 In the face of the danger of the false prophets, true prophecy, which means apocalyptic, however, is preserved in its basic concepts. That is unnecessary if one has a prophet. But if one does not have one, it becomes a matter of urgency. So it is not surprising that the apocalyptic conclusion of the Didache appears as a reference to a genre of revelation-literature; nevertheless is itself no apocalypse, but only an aide-mémoire of apocalyptic theology.
53 13:4 (Rordorf & Tuilier, La Doctrine, p. 191, lines 7f) formulates a rule for these communities.
