CONFORMED TO THE IMAGE
OF HIS SON
Romans 1:4 says that Jesus Christ "was desig nated the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness out of the resurrection of the dead." Christ's divinity and glory as the Son of God were concealed in His flesh. No one had vi sion that could penetrate through His flesh to see that He was the glorious Son of God. But after He had passed through the process of death and res urrection, He was designated the Son of God, that is, He was marked out and manifested to be the Son of God.
THE SPIRIT OF HOLINESS
This designation was according to the Spirit of holiness. The Spirit of holiness here is in con trast to the flesh in Romans 1:3, which speaks of Christ as the seed of David according to the flesh. As the flesh in verse 3 refers to the human essence of Christ, so the Spirit in this verse does not refer to the Person of the Holy Spirit of God, but to the divine essence of Christ, which is "the fullness of the Godhead" (Col. 2:9).
