Prefatory Note

R ev. Benjamin Breckinridge Warfield, D.D., LL.D., Professor of Didactic and Polemic Theology in the Theological Seminary of the Presbyterian
Church at Princeton, New Jersey, provided in his will for the collection and publication of the numerous articles on theological subjects which he contributed to encyclopaedias, reviews, and other periodicals, and appointed a committee to edit and publish these papers. In pursuance of his instructions, this, the fifth volume, containing his articles on Calvin and Calvinism, has been prepared under the editorial direction of this committee.
The generous permission to publish articles contained in this volume is gratefully acknowledged as follows: Lamar and Whitmore, Agents, for the article taken from The Methodist Quarterly Review, Funk and Wagnalls Company for the article taken from "The New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious
Knowledge," and The Board of Christian Education of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A. for the article taken from the Memorial Edition of "Calvin's
Institutes."
In addition to the articles on Calvin and Calvinism published in this volume, there remain to be mentioned three addresses in commemoration of the four hundredth anniversary of the birth of Calvin: "John Calvin the Theologian"; "The Theology of Calvin"; "Present-Day Attitude to Calvinism."
These addresses have been published in pamphlet form under the title "Calvin as
a Theologian and Calvinism Today," at Philadelphia by The Presbyterian Board of Publication, and at Edinburgh by The Hope Trust.
The clerical preparation of this volume has been done by Mr. John E.
Meeter, to whom the thanks of the committee are hereby expressed.
