What you are reading in this web book is an original UECF.NET study companion: for the Foreword and each of the fifteen chapters, we provide a Scripture heading (quoted here from the public-domain King James Version, with a link to the same passage in the UECF.NET NKJV Bible), our own original summary, key points, a description of a few of Graham’s illustrations, one short cited quotation per chapter, and discussion questions written for this companion. None of the summarising prose on these pages is Graham’s own wording — it is UECF.NET’s paraphrase and analysis, written for this study companion, and should not be quoted as though it were a quotation from the book itself. Readers who want Graham’s actual words should read the book, which remains widely available from booksellers and libraries, or contact the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
How this web edition was produced
UECF.NET was supplied with a scanned PDF copy of the printed edition described above. Our team read the book in full — its front matter, Foreword, and all fifteen chapters — to identify its structure, its themes, and the main line of Graham’s argument in each chapter. That structural information (titles, approximate original page numbers, and Scripture references) is factual and is presented accurately here. The explanatory content built around it on every page — the “big idea” notes, summaries, key points, illustration descriptions, and discussion questions — was then composed by UECF.NET specifically for this study companion.

Graham’s own book primarily quotes the New International Version, along with the ASV, KJV, NASB, Phillips, and Living Bible translations at various points; none of that copyrighted translation text is reproduced here. Each Scripture heading also links to the same passage in the UECF.NET NKJV Bible so readers can read the fuller context in a modern translation hosted on this site.
Original page references
Each chapter page notes the page on which that chapter begins in the printed first edition. For most chapters this number comes directly from the book’s own table of contents; for Chapters 7, 8, and 15, whose page numbers were not legible after scanning, the number shown is an approximate estimate based on surrounding chapters and is marked “approx.”
About the author
Billy Graham (1918–2018) was an American evangelist who preached the Christian gospel to more people in live audiences than anyone else in history, and served as a spiritual advisor to numerous U.S. presidents. Hope for the Troubled Heart, first published in 1991, is one of more than thirty books he wrote addressing how Christian faith speaks to human suffering, grief, and pain.
