Pratt, were first published in 1856 and reissued by the Banner of Truth Trust in 1978. The original Eclectic Society lapsed at some time in the middle of the nineteenth century. In April 1955, having recognized the need in our generation (which Newton saw in his) for “mutual religious intercourse . . . and the investigation of spiritual truth,” an invitation went out from All Souls Church, Langham Place, to twenty-two younger evangelical clergy to spend a day off together and to refound the Eclectic Society. From that modest beginning it grew spontaneously until by 1966, it had a membership of over 1,000 in seventeen regional groups. It is now limited to evangelical clergy and laity under forty years of age, and is therefore smaller, but still influential.

. One is Tony Waterson, professor of virology at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith. He is modest enough to say that, on reflection, his comments were “probably brash, ill-considered and immature,” and that they concerned technicalities of structure and delivery rather than the really important questions whether God was anointing the message, Jesus was being exalted, and people were being blessed. But I think he underestimates the help and challenge which he gave me.

The quotations are taken from a report of the 1979 commencement address which Malcolm Muggeridge gave at Gordon College, Wenham, Massachusetts, although in a personal letter dated 24 September 1979, he told me that he had used the “Gargoyle and Steeple” image many times in writing and speaking. “To the best of my memory,” he said, “the notion first struck me at Salisbury, noting that exquisite steeple climbing with crazy audacity into the sky, and then the little gargoyle faces grinning so malevolently down at the earth.”

. This moving exhortation was sent to me perhaps thirty years ago by Canon Fred Pickering, at that time vicar of Christ Church, Southport. It is not to be found in any of the three volumes of Spurgeon’s Lectures to My Students, however. Nor is it in An All-Round Ministry or in his Twelve Sermons on the Holy Spirit. I have been unable to trace the reference.
