The successful completion of any translation requires more than dogged effort. Out of sheer generosity other scholars have encouraged and supported us in our endeavor and offered critical feedback on our work. Their suggestions have helped us clarify our ideas, improved the quality of our translation, and saved us from howlers and other infelicities contrary to good
English prose. First of all we would like to thank our mutual dissertation advisor Lewis Ayres, who put us into contact with the editor of the Fathers of the Church series and advised us at every step along the way. His own work on the fourth-century
Trinitarian controversies has shaped our thinking about the era in general and Basil of Caesarea in particular in ways that we will probably never fully comprehend. We would also like to thank our teacher Steven Strange, whose seminars on ancient philosophy have been fundamental to our contextualizing of Basil within philosophical traditions and whose weekly Greek reading groups have been vital to our facility in Greek. We consulted him on many philosophical points in the course of our project, and the eagerness with which he shared his extensive knowledge with us is nothing less than a model of what scholarly collaboration ought to be.
At the Annual Meeting of the North American Patristics Society in May 2008, we chaired a session entitled "Translating Basil of Caesarea's Contra Eunomium." Its subject was a discussion of a draft version of our translation of Against Eunomius 1.6-7, 2.4, and 2.28-29. We would like to thank our respondents, Lewis
Ayres, John Behr, and Stephen Hildebrand, for agreeing to take part in the session and for their insightful comments. Our thanks as well to those who participated in the session, particularly Robert Wilken and Kelley Spoerl; our translation is better ix

because of their remarks. We would also like to thank Christopher Beeley and Timothy McConnell, both of whom read through our entire translation and generously offered extensive feedback on it. We have incorporated many of their suggestions into our final version. Our thanks as well to Amy Levad, who copy-edited our introduction and a substantial portion of our translation before its final submission. Our editor, Carole Monica Burnett, has made the entire process pleasurable: thank you.
It goes without saying that any errors and bungled prose remain ours.
