Andrew Murray (1828–1917) was a South African pastor, teacher, and writer of the Dutch Reformed Church, and one of the most widely read devotional authors of his era. Born in Graaff-Reinet, Cape Colony, and educated in Scotland and the Netherlands, he served as a minister for more than fifty years and became a leading voice in the Keswick "higher life" holiness movement of the late nineteenth century.
Murray wrote more than two hundred books and pamphlets on prayer, holiness, and the Christian life, including Abide in Christ, With Christ in the School of Prayer, The Spirit of Christ, and Absolute Surrender. His writing consistently returns to a single theme: the believer's entire, moment-by-moment dependence on God and the fulness of the Holy Spirit. Absolute Surrender and Other Addresses, first published in 1897 by Fleming H. Revell Company, gathers nine of his addresses on this theme, delivered to Christian workers and congregations.
Murray died in 1917 in Wellington, South Africa, where he had pastored for many years and helped found a missionary training institute that continues to this day.
