Andrew Murray (1828–1917) was a South African pastor, teacher, and one of the most widely read devotional writers of the nineteenth century. Born in Graaff-Reinet, Cape Colony, the son of a Dutch Reformed missionary, he was educated in Aberdeen, Scotland, and at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and was ordained in 1848. He served Dutch Reformed congregations at Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and for more than forty years at Wellington, where he also helped found a missionary training institute and a teachers' college.
Murray wrote more than two hundred books and pamphlets on prayer, holiness, and the Christian life. ‘With Christ in the School of Prayer’, first published in 1885 and revised in this form in 1895, grew out of his own conviction that ‘the place and power of prayer in the Christian life is too little understood.’ Cast as thirty-one ‘lessons’ drawn from the teaching of Christ and His apostles on prayer, with a closing study of the life of George Müller, it remains one of Murray's most widely read works, alongside ‘Abide in Christ’, ‘The Spirit of Christ’, and ‘Absolute Surrender’.
Murray died in 1917 in Wellington, South Africa, where he had pastored for many years. His writing continues to be read for its single, recurring theme: the believer's entire, moment-by-moment dependence on God and the fulness of the Holy Spirit.
