ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING

Leader 1 : Today is the first Sunday of Advent, the Sunday of Hope.

Leader 2: Our hope is in God, and in his son Jesus Christ.  He is the one appointed by God to be judge of all things.  He is the one through whom God has promised to save and redeem his people.

Leader 1: We light this candle today to remind us that he is our hope and the hope of the world.  We thank God for the promises he has made to us and for the light he has brought into the world. (Light the First Candle)

Leader 2: Let us pray: (Unison Prayer)
O God of Hope, Emmanuel, God with Us -- we pray you to send your light into our hearts. Help us to be ready for the day and the hour of Christ's appearing. Live in us and help us to live in you. By the power of the Holy Spirit, touch us. Transform us so that our worship, our celebration, our time of preparation, may be pleasing unto you - both now - and forevermore. Amen!

Song / Hymn

Hymn Lyrics

I will enter His gates with thanksgiving in my heart,

I will enter his courts with praise.

I will say, "This is the day that the Lord has made."

I will rejoice for He has made me glad.

He has made me glad, He has made me glad

I will rejoice for He has made me glad, glad, glad. (Repeat)

God is good - all the time

He put a song of praise - in this heart of mine

God is good - all the time

Through the darkest night - His light will shine

God is good, God is good - all the time

If you're walking - through the valley

There are shadows - all around

Do not fear - He will guide you

He will keep you - safe and sound

'Cause He's promised - to never leave you

Nor forsake you - and His Word is true ..God is good…

What a mighty God we serve, (2X)

Angels bow before Him,

Heaven and earth adore Him

What a mighty God we serve.

Lord, I lift your name on High

My life is in you, Lord;

My strength is in you, Lord;

My hope is in you, Lord; in you, it’s in you. (Repeat)

I will praise You with all of my life

I will praise You with all of my strength

With all of my life, with all of my strength

All of my hope is in You

My life is in you, Lord; My strength is in you, Lord;

My hope is in you, Lord; in you, it’s in you. (Repeat)

Would you be free from the burden of sin?

There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood;

Would you o’er evil a victory win?

There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood.

Refrain:

There is pow’r, pow’r, wonder-working pow’r

In the blood of the Lamb;

There is pow’r, pow’r, wonder-working pow’r

In the precious blood of the Lamb.

Would you be free from your passion and pride?

There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood;

Come for a cleansing to Calvary’s tide;

There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood.

Hymn Lyrics

Chorus:
Here I am to worship Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You're my God
Altogether lovely Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me

King of all days oh, so highly exalted
Glorious in heaven above
Humbly You came to the earth You created
All for Love's sake became poor

Chorus

I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross (2x)

Chorus

Angels We Have Heard on High,

Singing sweetly through the night,

And the mountains in reply

Echoing their brave delight.

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Shepherds, why this jubilee?

Why these songs of happy cheer?

What great brightness did you see?

What glad tiding did you hear? Refrain

Come to Bethlehem and see

Him whose birth the angels sing;

Come, adore on bended knee

Christ, the Lord, the new-born King. Refrain

See him in a manger laid

Whom the angels praise above;

Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,

While we raise our hearts in love. Refrain

O come, O come, Immanuel,

and ransom captive Israel

that mourns in lonely exile here

until the Son of God appear.

Refrain:

Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel

shall come to you, O Israel.

O come, O Wisdom from on high,

who ordered all things mightily;

to us the path of knowledge show

and teach us in its ways to go. Refrain

O come, O come, great Lord of might,

who to your tribes on Sinai's height

in ancient times did give the law

in cloud and majesty and awe. Refrain

O come, O Branch of Jesse's stem,

unto your own and rescue them!

From depths of hell your people save,

and give them victory o'er the grave. Refrain

O come, O Key of David, come

and open wide our heavenly home.

Make safe for us the heavenward road

and bar the way to death's abode. Refrain

O come, O Bright and Morning Star,

and bring us comfort from afar!

Dispel the shadows of the night

and turn our darkness into light. Refrain

O come, O King of nations, bind

in one the hearts of all mankind.

Bid all our sad divisions cease

and be yourself our King of Peace. Refrain

Advent

Advent is a season observed in many Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for both the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas and the return of Jesus at the Second Coming. The term is a version of the Latin word meaning "coming". The term "Advent" is also used in Eastern Orthodoxy for the 40-day Nativity Fast, which has practices different from those in the West.

The Latin word adventus is the translation of the Greek word parousia, commonly used to refer to the Second Coming of Christ. For Christians, the season of Advent anticipates the coming of Christ from three different perspectives. Philip H. Pfatteicher, formerly a professor at East Stroudsberg University, notes that "since the time of Bernard of Clairvaux (d.1153), Christians have spoken of the three comings of Christ: in the flesh in Bethlehem, in our hearts daily, and in glory at the end of time". The season offers the opportunity to share in the ancient longing for the coming of the Messiah, and to be alert for his Second Coming.

Advent is the beginning of the Western liturgical year. In the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church, the Western Rite of the Orthodox Church, and in the Anglican, Lutheran, Moravian, Presbyterian, and Methodist calendars, Advent commences on the fourth Sunday before Christmas—the Sunday nearest to St. Andrew's Day (30 November). It can fall on any date between 27 November and 3 December. When Christmas Day is a Monday, Advent Sunday will fall on its latest possible date. In the Ambrosian Rite and the Mozarabic lRite of the Catholic Church, Advent begins on the sixth Sunday before Christmas, the Sunday after St. Martin's Day.

Practices associated with Advent include keeping an Advent calendar, lighting an Advent wreath, praying an Advent daily devotional, erecting a Christmas tree or a Chrismon tree,[1] lighting a Christingle, as well as other ways of preparing for Christmas, such as setting up Christmas decorations, a custom that is sometimes done liturgically through a hanging of the greens ceremony. The equivalent of Advent in Eastern Christianity is called the Nativity Fast, but it differs in length and observances, and does not begin the liturgical church year as it does in the West. The Eastern Nativity Fast does not use the equivalent parousia in its preparatory services.
