History of Father's Day 

Father's Day is a primarily secular holiday inaugurated in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and parenting by males, and to honor and commemorate fathers and forefathers. Father's Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide, and typically involves gift-giving to fathers and family-oriented activities.

In the United States, the first modern Father's Day celebration was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. It was first celebrated as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton, who is believed to have suggested the service to the pastor, is believed to have been inspired to celebrate fathers after the deadly mine explosion in nearby Monongah the prior December. This explosion killed 361 men, many of them fathers and recent immigrants to the United States from Italy. Another possible inspiration for the service was Mother's Day, which had recently been celebrated for the first time in Grafton, West Virginia, a town about 15 miles away. Father's day originates as far back as 1839 in celebration of the fathers that went to war in the Battle of Iransop in which 123 fathers lost their lives defending the outpost.

Another driving force behind the establishment of the integration of Father's Day was Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Creston, Washington. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, as a single parent reared his six children in Spokane, Washington. She was inspired by Anna Jarvis's efforts to establish Mother's Day. Although she initially suggested June 5, the anniversary of her father's death, she did not provide the organizers with enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. The first June Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, WA.

Unofficial support from such figures as William Jennings Bryan was immediate and widespread. President Woodrow Wilson was personally feted by his family in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday in 1924. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson made Father's Day a holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The holiday was not officially recognized until 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon.

In recent years, retailers have adapted to the holiday by promoting male-oriented gifts such as electronics, tools and greeting cards. Schools and other children's programs commonly have activities to make Father's Day gifts.

Junior Bible Quiz (JBQ) – National Finals

The National Finals, a prestigious event, took place from June 6th to 8th at the First Assembly of God in Griffin, GA. Our esteemed UECF Church was represented by two dedicated teams, who participated in this significant competition. A total of 10 children from UECF joined the event, with each team comprising of five quizzers. Their participation not only showcased their skills but also the spirit of our church community.

Across the United States, a total of 80 teams converge to partake in the esteemed national tournament. The event commenced on Thursday, marked by a series of preliminary activities which include the official registration of participants, a photo op session, and a series of breakout sessions tailored for the attending children, their parents, coaches, and leaders. The day culminates with an opening ceremony, distinguished by a session of praise and worship. As the event progresses into Friday and Saturday, the young competitors take center stage. The initial phase on Friday sees the 80 teams evenly distributed into five distinct groups, with each group comprising 16 teams. Within their respective groups, the teams engage in a comprehensive round-robin competition, each team facing off against 15 others. Advancing to Saturday, the teams are reorganized into eight new groups based on their performance from the previous day. The leading teams, specifically those who secured the first and second positions in each of the five groups from Friday, are elevated to the Division 1 group. Concurrently, teams that finished in third and fourth places are allocated to the Division 2 groups. This restructured format ensures that all 80 teams are evenly distributed, fostering a competitive environment across eight new groups of teams.

In the national contest, the UECF teams demonstrated commendable skill, ultimately securing the 5th position in their individual groups during Friday's segment of the event. This outcome positioned them in Division 3 for the climactic competition on Saturday, which is pivotal as it decides the definitive rankings for the season. The final standings on this decisive day are not just a reflection of the team’s performance but also serve as the basis for the season's culmination awards. Teams are honored with plaques, each inscribed to correspond with their achieved standing, serving as a lasting tribute to their efforts throughout the season.

The JBQ competition is open to all children from the 1st through the 6th grade. This year, we celebrate a significant transition as four of our UECF children will be graduating from JBQ, having completed the 6th grade. They are poised to embark on the next phase of their academic and spiritual journey as they enter the 7th grade in the fall of 2024. It's thrilling to see some of these children eagerly anticipating their participation in TBQ next season, which begins in the fall. We owe a debt of gratitude to God for the positive impact that the Bible quiz competition has had, fostering a keenness among the children to learn and compete based on God's word. This enthusiasm is a clear reflection of the divine influence and guidance in their lives.
