Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday is a moveable feast which always falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates an event reported by all four Canonical Gospels Mark 11:1-11, Matthew 21:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, and John 12:12-19 - the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem in the days before his Passion. The difficulty of procuring palms for that day's ceremonies in unfavorable climates for palms led to the substitution of boughs of box, yew, willow or other native trees. The Sunday was often designated by the names of these trees, as Yew Sunday or by the general term Branch Sunday.

According to the Gospels, before entering Jerusalem, Jesus was staying at Bethany and Bethphage, and the Gospel of John adds that he had dinner with Lazarus, and his sisters Mary and Martha. While there, Jesus is described by the Synoptic Gospels as sending two unnamed disciples to the village over against them, in order to retrieve a colt that had been tied up but never been ridden, and to say, if questioned, that the colt was needed by the Lord but would be returned in a short period of time. The Synoptics and John state that Jesus knew people in the area, such as Simon the Leper, and so it could be argued that the presence of the colt had already been organised by Jesus' associates. The Gospel of John, however, merely says that Jesus found the colt. Both John and the Synoptics state that Jesus then rode the colt (or in Matthew the colt and its mother) into Jerusalem, with the Synoptics adding that the disciples had first put their cloaks on it, so as to make it more comfortable. The Gospels go on to describe how Jesus rode into Jerusalem, and how the people there lay down their cloaks in front of him, and also lay down small branches of trees. The people are also described as singing part of Psalm 118 - ...Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father, David. ... (Psalms 118:25-26). Where this entry is supposed to have taken place is unspecified; some scholars argue that the Golden Gate is the likely location, since that was where it was believed the Jewish messiah would enter Jerusalem; other scholars think that an entrance to the south, which had stairs leading directly to the Temple, would be more likely (Kilgallen 210). According to Jewish tradition (Sefer ha Zohar, part about donkey driver) the one who is able to bridle and ride a colt (or donkey) has a status of Messiah.

At the District Finals held yesterday in Burlington, all participating children received seasonal awards for their accomplishments throughout the season, which began with Meet 1 in October 2025 and concluded with Meet 4 in February 2026. Over the season, the students diligently studied and memorized material specific to their league.

TBQ consists of three leagues, and our participants were involved in two:

XP5 League: Covered Galatians chapters 2, 3, 5, and 6; Ephesians chapters 4, 5, and 6; and Philippians chapter 2.

Championship League: Covered all chapters from Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.

Our students consistently placed first, Second and third in their respective league matches and individual tournaments, reflecting their hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Their commitment has been truly inspiring.

XP5 League

• UECF Light Bearers – 1^st Place

Members: Joanna Bollam, Joha Pilli, Jairus Peyyala, Lisa Dayala

Championship League

• UECF Worship Pathfinders – 3^rd Place

Members: Abhinav Gatala, Ashriel Vellore, Blessy Devi, Sahil Vuppula, Samrudh Ghanta, Viraj Sandela

This year, Kids were also honored with the Rookie of the Year award in recognition of their exceptional outstanding performance throughout the season. It was truly wonderful to see two of our UECF children receive this distinction, a testament to their hard work, enthusiasm, and growth throughout the season.

The TBQ District Finals took place on March 28^th, 2026, at the Fountain of Life in Burlington, NJ. Two teams from our church qualified: one Championship team and one XP5 team. Both teams showcased their skills and dedication during the event.

Although our Championship teams earned qualification for the Northeast Regional competition in Albany, NY, they made the thoughtful decision to conclude their season at the District Finals due to school commitments and the additional demands of preparing for regional events.

We are so proud of everything our students accomplished this year. They approached every challenge with determination, humility, and a genuine desire to grow. Their commitment—strengthened and sustained by God’s guidance—has been a powerful example of what faith and hard work can achieve.

As our children continue to grow, both in their spiritual walk and in their academic pursuits we, as a church family, remain committed to standing beside them. It is our joy and responsibility to nurture their gifts, encourage their progress, and support the remarkable potential God has placed within each of them.

We also extend our deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to all parents, volunteers, and the entire UECF Church community for the unwavering support you have shown throughout this season. Your prayers, encouragement, and willingness to step forward whenever needed created a strong foundation that allowed our children to flourish.
