About this book
Reality and Religion: Meditations on God, Man and Nature
Sadhu Sundar Singh (1889 – disappeared 1929)
In Reality and Religion, the Indian evangelist Sadhu Sundar Singh sets down twenty-seven short chapters of meditations on God, human nature and the natural world, each built from simple, vivid illustrations drawn from plants, animals, the weather and everyday life. Written at Sabathu in the Simla Hills and completed in Urdu, the book was translated into English with the help of Dr. A. J. Appasamy and carries an Introduction by the Oxford New Testament scholar B. H. Streeter, who describes both the Sadhu’s travels in the years leading up to the book and the circumstances of its writing. As Sundar Singh explains in his own Preface, he offers the book not as philosophy or theology but as the fruit of his own meditation and prayer, “whose delight it is to meditate on the love of God and on the great wonders of His creation.”

About Sadhu Sundar Singh
Sadhu Sundar Singh (1889 – disappeared 1929) was an Indian Christian evangelist and ascetic. Born into a Sikh family in Punjab, he experienced a vision of Christ as a teenager that led to his conversion, after which he adopted the saffron robe of a Hindu “sadhu” (holy man) as a sign that following Christ did not require abandoning his Indian identity. He travelled widely as an itinerant preacher across India, Tibet and other parts of Asia and the West, becoming known for his simple, story-based style of teaching. Reality and Religion (1924) was written at Sabathu, Simla Hills, and translated from his original Urdu with the help of Dr. A. J. Appasamy. Five years later, in 1929, Singh set out on a journey into Tibet and was never seen again; he is presumed to have died on that journey.
